THE growing number of bush knife carriers is becoming a concern for the public in Madang town.

Local level government president for Astrolabe LLG in Rai Coast district Amili Deide said youths labelled as “town reds” were seen everywhere with bush knives.

Deide said youths roamed around in all corners brandishing the knives.

“Why are they carrying bush knives around? I did not see this before in this town, we must make a law to remove bush knives from any person carrying them around in public places,” Deide said.

Madang deputy governor Rama Marisan said the section of the North-Coast Road between RD Tuna Canners and Nagada junction was not safe anymore.

Marisan said it was like that everyone who stood on roadside had a bush knife in his possession.

“We need to create an operation to remove all bush knives from the roadside and allow the travelling public to travel freely,” he said.

A police source said there was a high number of murder cases through the use of bush knives.
