BUSINESS is flourishing in Central following the betel nut ban in the National Capital District.
Sellers are now doing their business at the Laloki market and roadsides.
The ban in the city has not stopped sellers or street vendors from doing business. Mothers and youths have taken over the front entrance of the market to sell store products and cooked food.
Small market sheds have been built opposite the Laloki market to cater for sellers, buyers and customers.
Youths and some mothers have built their own sheds.
One of the youths from Laloki ward 14 said he was happy with trading at the market because it gave them an opportunity to earn.
“We are building these sheds on the roadside to allow for more vendors provide shelters for mothers and children,” he said
He said the market was in full operation on Tuesday, with people coming in and out just for betel nuts.
“Not only Central people are doing business here.”
Many vendors from betel nut markets in the city have flocked into Laloki.
A woman said the betel nut trade was good business for everyone involved in it.
“This will allow for other garden produce and cooked foods along with stores items to be sold,”
The concern raised by youths was about some police officers from NCD patrolling the highway and taking away packets of cigarettes from them.”
