THE National Capital District Commission (NCDC) is adamant it will not back down to any form of threats following its decision to ban betel nuts in Port Moresby.

Commissioner Clemence Kanau reiterated the NCDC board’s stand yesterday in response to criticisms from a cross-section of the community – and even legal and personal threats over the decision.

“I urge the citizens of Port Moresby to adhere to the betel nut ban as it is in the best interests

of the NCDC, its people and the city.

“The NCDC will not back down on its decision now, not even any form of threat will deter it from implementing the betel nut ban and maintaining strict policing methods,” Kanau said.

He dismissed claims that it was the governor’s decision, saying, “The betel nut ban was adopted by the NCDC board following an unanimous decision by the board and commissioners on Nov 2011.”

The betel nut ban in the capital came into full effect on Tuesday following a seven-day grace period granted to vendors to sell off their stock.

Kanau appealed to city residents to start looking at other alternatives of making money rather than through the sale of betel nuts to sustain their livelihood.

The commissioner suggested that those who could adhere to the ban could consider relocating to their places of origin.

Kanau challenged the people of Gulf and Kairuku (Central) to work out alternatives for employment with their political leaders, and not blame NCDC for denying them economic opportunities.
