Business student wins Miss Madang title

THE annual Miss Madang beauty pageant was held at the Madang Resort over the weekend with Miss Divine Word University Josie Nicholas crowned as Miss Madang 2020.
Nicholas, 21, a third-year business accounting student sponsored by the university, also won the traditional category.
She gave an exceptional presentation on education, her topic of choice.
She will be representing Madang at the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant PNG next year as this year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Other contestants included Miss Niugini Dive Adventures Micahleen McKenia, 1st runner-up; Miss Madang Resort Dominica Wuliyelo, 2nd runner-up; Miss Madang Health Authority Daphney Siamoli; Miss Chamber of Commerce Hennet Mong; and, Miss Country Women’s Association Alorah Mal.
Madang Resort owner Sir Peter Barter said the objective of this year’s pageant was to empower women by giving the contestants a platform to discuss the various topics they advocated on.
Also, it was a charity event where all proceeds raised would go to rebuilding the blood bank at Modilon.
Former prime minister Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, who attended the event, spoke about female empowerment and leadership in the province.
“I am very impressed in the way Madang is taking leadership and gender equality,” he said.
“It is an example that should be followed throughout PNG.”
