Businesses discuss Covid effect

AROUND a 100 representatives from business houses in Lae, Morobe, met last Wednesday at the Lae Golf Club to discuss ways in promoting awareness on the Covid-19 in workplaces and the community.
Lae Chamber of Commerce president John Bryne organised the meeting for businesses to have an information session with the Executive Morobe Emergency Operations committee.
Bryne told The National that the gathering was all about information sharing on what the businesses knew and didn’t know about the Covid-19, its impact and transmissions.
“We know that in Port Moresby, there’s transmission, so the meeting was about us asking more questions and getting answers in these trying times and conditions,” he said.
“It’s the help we can do in terms of educating the managers and businesses on how to communicate with our people.”
Among those present at the meeting were Morobe health authority chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Kipas Binga, ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) Peter Guinness and Lae city authority acting CEO Neil Ellery.
Bryne said most businesses were operating and managing through this period where Port Moresby had been locked down and businesses and ports around the country had been impacted.
He said while there was some loss in business, it was important to deal with the spread of the coronavirus by educating the people about the need to practice social distancing, washing hands, wearing masks and practicing good personal hygiene to contain it.
