PEOPLE living along the side of the Busu River in Lae are thankful for the re-diversion of the river on Saturday supported by the Morobe government with K100,000 and several companies.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu acknowledged the support of business houses PNG Ready Mix, R and Sons, NKW Group, Cameron Construction, IDF Foo Ltd and China Railway International (RAI) in providing machinery to work in partnership with the Department of Works, Morobe, to divert the river to its original course.
Saonu said in March he had received news that people living along the banks of Busu were in great danger of losing their homes.
He told the Works division to assess the situation.
Saonu said funds were secured to work on the diversion.
“We have concern for you, that is why we are here today to witness that such event had never happened in any part of Papua New Guinea,” Saonu said.
“This way of assisting the people is not building a bridge, a classroom or an infrastructure or opening of a project, no.
“This is a project where it’s an encounter with nature.” He said after the re-diversion, there was another stage of work and that was to build strong barriers to protect people living along the banks.
Saonu assured the communities of the government support.
