THIRTEEN players from Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) club Butterflies have been invited by Digicel Cup franchises to train and trial with them for the upcoming season.
Butterflies coach Michael Boeo told The National last week that former Rabaul Gurias rake Brian Gispe and Enga Mioks utility Maya Clarke had joined the Port Moresby Vipers’ train-on squad while others would link up with Gulf Isou and Hela Wigmen for the offseason.
“A total of 13 players who played in POMRFL grand final loss to Tarangau have been invited by the Vipers, Isou and Wigmen on a train-and-trial basis,” he said.
“Butterflies pair Rex Tandowa and Yeki Benjamin have been recalled by the Vipers.
“They will be joined by their Butterflies teammates Brian Gispe and Maya Clarke with three other rookies.
“Five-eighth Yunny Patrick has been recalled by Isou and joining him in their train-on squad is former Mendi Muruk and Butterfly Joas Toringi with three more of my players.
“We also have one player who was invited by the Wigmen.
“This is great news for our club despite our heartbreaking loss to Tarangau.
“My coaching staff and I have played our part.”
He said it was now up to those players to do well in training and impress the selectors to make the final cut.
Boeo said developing players for inter-city teams was the club’s main goal.
He said the club took great pride in having its players join Digicel Cup franchises.
Boeo said it would also give their Under-20 players an opportunity to fill the void in their A-Grade side.
