THE auditor-general and the public accounts committee need to wake up and perform their duties effectively and efficiently to enhance the delivery of goods and services in the country, an official says.
National Economic and Fiscal Commission chairman and chief executive Hohora Suve said this during a high-level stakeholder forum on improving and sustaining service delivery systems in the country in Port Moresby yesterday.
“To improve and sustain delivery of goods and services to our people, it needs the government’s approach,” Suve said.
“An important component of it is being able to ensure public funds are accounted for and given to areas where they are intended for service delivery to improve people’s livelihood.
“That is important. We need the auditor-general and the public accounts committee to get back to their work and reactivate the system to get it going.”
Finance Secretary Dr Ken Ngangan, who highlighted the need for transparent and prudent management of public funds to strengthen service delivery in the country, said public accounts was an area in which the government hadmandated further major reforms and the has taken necessary steps towards that.
“The completion of public accounts is being supported by continuing reform efforts to better integrate the preparation and on-going management of public accounts through a strengthened interface with the integrated finance management system, with trust accounting and improved management practices in the public sector,” Ngangan said.
