UTILITY companies have been urged to provide essential services to the community during the state of emergency period.
Mike Quinn, vice-president of Real Estate Industry Association and managing director of Professionals PNG Real Estate, told The National on Friday that some State-owned enterprises were not performing to expectation of late and experiencing high absenteeism.
“An example being Water PNG in Lae which is an essential service,” he said.
“Efforts by the police and defence force and all those that stepped up to help during this period of uncertainty should be loudly applauded as has been the case in many other countries.”
Quinn commended the Government’s approach in fighting Covid-19.
The Government has extended the SOE to another two months.
“The Government has adopted to control the virus and restrict its access to PNG,” he said.
“It has been very responsible to date.
“The PNG people have generally been very mature and tolerant about how they have handled and reacted to the virus.
“Many were simply scared and didn’t know what to expect.
“As time goes on and we remain clear of the virus, there is a risk opportunists may use it as an excuse to loot and steal.
“The police need to continue to be vigilant.
“We need to learn from the measures taken to stop the spread of the virus and even though the risk of being effected is very low now.
“We should continue to adopt these measures of containment.”
