LAE police want citizens living in and around Lae city to help police identify and report law breakers to police using social media.
Lae Met Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban said people were good at taking pictures of police involved in unethical behaviour and exposing them on social media.
“Why not they also take pictures and names of those involved in criminal activities in their communities and expose them so that police could trace up on that and make arrests,” he said.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said police wanted to help the public as much as possible and they were giving all they could despite the fact that manpower in the force was down.
“For police foot-beat patrol alone, we have fewer number of policemen to cover the whole of Lae city but that does not keep us down,” he said.
“That is why the public are urged to come forward to assist police, provide information as this is very important.”
Chief Supt Kunyanban said if people had a chance to take pictures of those law breakers and report them to police, “it would be very effective when police were out to do arrests”.
He said Minister for Lands and Physical Planning and Lae MP John Rosso had planned to help by recruiting reservists.
He further encourage the public to utilise the police toll free number to report crimes.
Chief Supt Kunyanban added that if calls to the police toll free number were somehow not working, then contact any policeman or woman.
Lae’s top cop said police needed support from the public to arrest and charge law breakers to keep the city safe for everyone.
