THREE suspects are on the run after escaping from police in Kiunga, North Fly in Western, police say.
A friend of theirs, from Tari in Hela, was not so lucky.
North Fly police commander Chief Insp Silva Sika told The National that he was recaptured by police and allegedly had 6kg of dried and packed marijuana on him.
“They were caught at the East Awin logging site in Kiunga on Sunday by two policemen.”
The four had walked seven days from Tari to Kiunga.
“However, three managed to escape from the policemen,” Chief Insp Sika said. “In the recent weeks and months, a high number of drug cases were reported in the same route which the culprits follow to get to Kiunga from Tari.
“Police have tried to keep an eye on that particular route, but many of the men who bring in drugs get away.
“Drugs are a serious destroyer of our communities. When you look at the size the bag of marijuana, just imagine how much damage it’s going to do to the people of Western.
“I think drug lords shouldn’t be allowed to live in this country.
“(Their numbers) should be reduced somehow and this is my warning – do not come and destroy our future. Those who are coming with drugs to destroy our province – if they are caught – they will be punished severely by the law.
“They are coming over to sell drugs and influence our youths.
“Those found conveying dangerous drugs, if found guilty, will see a maximum of two years’ imprisonment.”
