THE Government has been urged to fix the two one-lane bridges on the North Coast road in Madang because of the many accidents happening there.

One is located just past Midiba market and one at coffee mill just before RD Tuna Canners Limited.

Former PNG rugby star Gabriel Kuk, who lives near the coffee mill bridge said he had witnessed many accidents at the bridge.

“Many lives were lost and vehicles damaged at that bridge,” Kuk said.

“It needs to be reconstructed into a double-lane bridge to avoid more accidents.”

He said there were developments taking place in North Coast such as the Pacific Marine Industrial project that would mean more traffic and people passing through that bridge.

Kuk said the Government was concentrating on developing the PMIZ project and the Madang provincial government should contribute by fixing the infrastructure.

Moses Silam from Wasab in the Sumgilbar local level government, Sumkar, said he lost his wife and children in an accident there.

“So many lives have been lost,” Salim said.

“I beg the provincial government to seek funds to fix that bridge.”
