Candidates, supporters told not to intimidate

POLICE have warned intending candidates and supporters to refrain from intimidating and harassing citizens so that everyone can enjoy a free and fair general election.
Police Commissioner Gari Baki said police officers in the provinces would provide security and guard the ballot papers.
Police will be assisted by soldiers and prison warders during the elections.
Baki said police would deal with people who caused disturbances during the elections or intimidate voters.
He also urged the people to vote wisely by understanding the character and traits of the candidate before voting.
“Ask the intending candidates if he or she has a home in his or her village instead of giving you K50 to buy your vote,” Baki said.
Assistant Commissioner Northern Peter Guinness and Morobe police commander Augustine Wampe also raised similar sentiments during the launching of the first maritime surveillance centre at Morobe post over the weekend.
Guinness said policing was a shared responsibility between the people and police.
He said police were there to protect the people and not to harm them.
