CENTRAL has called on the Government to activate a State of Emergency after 11 people were killed and all their food crops were destroyed by rain and strong winds.
Rigo MP Lekwa Gure said since the strong winds and heavy rain began on Dec 31, the province was facing hardship and needed relief urgently.
“Fourteen lives have been claimed, while more than 10 people are injured. All our food crops were destroyed and we need the National Disaster Centre to step in and assist our people, immediately,” Gura said.
Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo also said that some parts of Central were still flooded and people were not able to bury the dead.
Minister for Inter-Government Relations and National Disaster Kevin Isifu said that the National Disaster Centre (NDC) had already sent in a team to assess the situation.
“NDC has also chartered a helicopter to send in a team to assess the situation in the higher lands of Central province so once they put together a report, we will then release K1m to provide much-needed assistance,” he said.
