Central police to have its own headquarters

THE Central government has pledged to look into building a new provincial police headquarters for the province.
Governor Rufina Peter said this would boost policing and enable businesses to operate freely and also improve law and order in the province.
Peter said this when chairing the provincial assembly on Tuesday at the Central government office in Port Moresby.
She said law and order was one her top priorities.
“To start improving law and order would be to look at the police headquarters, up-skilling policemen and the recruitment of more manpower for the district and local level governments,” she said.
Peter said the provincial government needed to take the lead on this initiative as it was their responsibility.
The Central police headquarters has been operating through a former training cell at the Gordon police barracks since 2017.
Meanwhile, the new governor said plans to build a new district headquarters for Hiri-Koiari were also underway.
She said in the meantime an office was being organised for the district to operate out of while plans for the building were being finalised.
“Together, with the Hiri-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu we will work on where we could source funding or agree on the land for the building,” she added.
Peter said the building of the police headquarters and the Hiri-Koiari office were her priorities for her administration.
