Central providing relief supplies to flood-hit areas

Central provincial disaster coordinator Tumai Ipou says they are steadily progressing in providing relief supplies to people affected by last month’s extensive flooding.
Ipou said that Mekeo and Bereina areas in the Kairuku district were the worst affected and so far the disaster officer has delivered non-food items to them.
“We are grateful to our donor partners like the Child Fund and Red Cross PNG for providing non-food items like water containers, aqua tablets and hygiene kits that were delivered over the last two weeks to affected areas in Bereina and Mekeo.
“Today Central government will deliver food to these areas.
“So we are now preparing to transport food with the help of the PNG Defence Force.
“The food will be transported in the new military trucks because roads are still bad and muddy from the receding floods,” Ipou said.
“In fact, the road conditions had hampered our effort to distribute non-food items to these areas in the last two weeks.”
