The recount of votes for the Central Bougainville seat ordered by the National Court has started, says Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato.
He said the judicial recount began on Monday in Buka.
“The PNGEC team from the headquarters in Port Moresby arrived in Buka last Thursday and on Friday a chartered plane delivered electronic counting equipment and materials,” he said.
“The counting centre was set up over the weekend followed by training of counting officials and scrutineers.
“Counting commenced on Monday this week and is progressing well.”
The Waigani National Court on Jan 30, ruled in favour of petitioner Sam Akoitai and ordered a recount of ballot papers in the primary count and the elimination process up to and including the 19th (final) elimination.
The court ordered that a recount be conducted on or before March 5 and end on or before March 18.
“Results of the recount will be presented to the Waigani National Court for ratification before March 23,” Gamato said.
“Pending the ratification of the recount, sitting MP Fr Simon Dumarinu remains in office as the Member for Central Bougainville.
“The total cost to conduct the Central Bougainville judicial recount is K1.3 million.”
The National Court also issued similar orders for North Fly on Feb 9 for a recount to be completed by April 16 and the results will be presented to the Waigani National Court for ratification on April 23.
