TWO women were charged with harbouring escapees from a Kerevat jail breakout last month and have been detained at the Kokopo Police Station, according to police.
East New Britain police commander (PPC) Snr Insp Joseph Tabali said police, with the help of Correctional Services personnel, arrested June Kilala, the wife of escapee Vincent Pauria, after shooting and killing him near Bilur village, Kokopo, on Wednesday.
He said the other woman arrested was the girlfriend of escapee Robin Ezekiel – both were taken into custody on Tuesday.
Snr Insp Tabali said police found out that the women had been looking after the men while they were on the run.
He said police also arrested two other men who were harbouring and feeding escapees.
“I am now calling on the people in East New Britain to stop hiding the escapees because they will be charged,” he said.
“The remaining four are from this province and the family members or the relatives must report them to police or bring them to us so we can deal with them accordingly.”
Snr Insp Tabali said seven escapees had so far, been recaptured.
He said out of the seven, two – Pauria and Samuel Judas – were shot and killed while two others – Samuel Max Paieti and Taken Waninara – had been shot and wounded.
The others, Ezekiel, Jason Dominic and Paul Madu Warait, had been recaptured without incident.
Four escapees are still at large.

  • People who are harboring escapes in their villages should be jailed and put behind bars for the illegal aiding of such dangerous elements in the society.
