TWO foreigners operating businesses in Lae, Morobe, appeared before the Lae District Court on Friday, charged with breaching the state of emergency (SOE) orders.
The two individuals were charged separately by police and appeared in court on police bail of K10,000 and K5,000 respectively.
Umi Bar owner on Kisere St, Lae, Lin Mei, 35, from Fujian province, China, was charged with breaching SOE order No.10 while her counterpart, 60-year-old Jiang Zu Xin was charged for breaching order No.24.
Police report presented in court revealed that on April 23 through to 25, Mei opened her bar and sold alcohol there.
She was warned to close the bar as it was operating against SOE orders.
Upon a second visit by Lae district administration staff and the Lae City Authority covid-19 awareness and compliance team, the bar was still operating and the matter was reported to police.
Police prosecutor Snr Sgt Vincent Suakai told the court that despite Mei having a valid trading licence, the facilities at which her business operated from was not like a restaurant. Lae district court Magistrate Nancy Lipai, while adjourning the case to May 27, ordered that the bar be closed for business.

  • Those foreigners seems to ignore our SoE rules and wants to make more monies while the entire business around PNG comply with the SoE rules, why charging them k10,000 and k5,000 respectively???they should be charge k100,000 and k50,000.Becasue when PNG government imposes alcohol ban public on holidays like easter, independece and christmass events those Chinese used that as a luky time to make extra monies. So only our government put a very tough punishment when breaking any rules during these peak period, everybody will automatically follow and avoid being fined ……

  • If they cannot respect simple laws of the country, then send them back to where they came from. They look down on us, spitting and shitting on us. The fines are peanuts compared to what they earn. Charge them heavily or kick them out. Otherwise they will continue to disregard and disrespect our laws.
