WITH only a day to go before the issue of writs for the general election, the Sepik Council of Chiefs have announced that they will pay the nomination fee of K1,000 for Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
Council chairman Eric Wangihao told a gathering in Wewak yesterday that like every other Sepik, the chiefs also respected and admired Sir Michael’s leadership.
As elders, it was only appropriate they paid for the cost of his nomination for the last time as East Sepik regional candidate.
Sir Michael began his political career in 1968 and served as chief minister in two house of assembly before leading the country into independence and became its first prime minister.
Sir Michael thanked the people of East Sepik for their continued support for him in politics for 44 years.
