Children need proper upbringing: Student

Children need a proper upbringing to ensure they grow up without any addiction, a student says.
Nathaniel Ovia, a student from the St Joseph International Catholic School in Port Moresby, said addiction had various physical and mental drawbacks and urged people to refrain from addictive practices.
“How you are brought up by your family has a huge impact on the type of person you become in the future,” Ovia said.
“The types of morals and ethics you are instilled with as a child influences the decisions you make.”
Ovia and five fellow students were part of the weekly Chat Room programme at the NBC Radio on May 15.
The students discussed ways to help other students suffering from addiction to things such as pornography, alcohol and drugs.
Robertha Pero said young people were under a lot of stress due to addiction.
Rozario Willy said addiction was a chronic disease.
“Due to consumption of drugs, people create a mentality of dependence or reliance on it, and sadly, this is affecting many of our young in PNG”, Willy said.
Minnie Tamarua said addictions were not limited to drugs and school.
“In this day and age, with the vast advances in technology, various forms of addictions have surfaced, such as watching porn,” Tamarua said.
“So besides addiction to drug and alcohol we now have a technological addiction.”
John Numapo reassured those suffering from addictions to go through a process of self-evaluation.
