A Chinese medical team which visited New Ireland has donated medical supplies worth more than K20,000 to the Kavieng General Hospital.
The supplies include antibiotics such as amoxicillin, paracetamol, anti-malarials and rapid-test kits for the hospital.
Chinese team leader Dr Ke Dazhi said they were happy to assist Kavieng General during their five-day visit from Dec 3.
Dazhi said they had observed noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, hypertension and stroke were on the rise and needed immediate attention.
He said the team had looked forward to working with local doctors and was happy to share their time and skills.
Dazhi said it was a way of giving back to the community as well as making friends with locals and enjoying the natural beauty of the province.
The third secretary from the Chinese Embassy Yumeng Chu was with the medical team.
Chu said the team was selected from big hospitals in China and was a volunteer group, part of inter-governmental cooperation agreements.
The team of six included a specialist urinologist, cardiologist and neurosurgeon as well as two surgical sisters who carried out clinical consultations.
