MORE than 2000 clergymen and evangelists of the Evangelical Lutheran Church are attending their annual week-long conference in Markham district, Morobe.

The National Pastors and Evangelists Conference is an annual “refresher” meeting to discuss their work and rekindle their service.

Markham MP Paul Isikel said the Lutheran Church had contributed to the country’s development through the work of missionaries and the church’s education programmes.

“I must take my hat off to the Evangelical Lutheran Church for all your selfless work in spreading the gospel into remote and inaccessible parts of the country, educating our young people who would otherwise live a life of crime and poverty,” he said.

Isikel said the church had produced many leaders who contributed to PNG’s development including Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Speaker Theo Zurenouc.

“We cannot do without you because one has to be healthy, wealthy and educated spiritually to turn this country around.”
