A media education seminar for high school students was hosted by the Catholic Church at the Catholic Bishops Conference (CBC) Centre in Port Moresby at the weekend.
The seminar, which was the second hosted by the church, was purposely to educate the students on what print media was and how it could be used to disseminate information.
A presentation was done by representatives from the media unit in the CBC.
Students went through the different parts of a newspaper, steps in writing a news article and identifying what is news.
They also went through how to write a basic news bulletin and newsletter.
After the seminar, students were given activities to work on in their own respective schools in relation to print media.
Bethany Tapoli, a grade 11 student from Marianville Secondary School, said she had learnt a lot from this seminar.
She said it would help her back in her own school to produce news bulletins and newsletters to share information.
“This seminar has broaden my understanding of what print media is, and how we can use print media as a platform to educate, amuse or entertain people, “Tapoli said.
A student from De La Salle Bomana, Cameron Artango, said he now knew the importance of print media and its features.
“I now know how a newspaper is made and why it is made,” he said.
In the first session last week, students were taken to National Broadcasting Commission to get a feel of radio communication for themselves.
They had a discussion on current issues on air.
