Church set for business

SP Hunters coach Matthew Church is keen to get into training now that they have competed their quarantine and are based at the Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay for the 2021 Queensland Intrust Super Cup season.
He said his squad had maintained their fitness despite being in isolation for the past month.
“They did skinfold checks and everyone is pretty much where we want them to be with only a few fairly inconsistent,” Church told QRL.com.
“A couple of guys have dropped it especially our bigger guys but there are pretty encouraging signs so far from the boys.
“It (quarantine) was a challenge for most of the guys.
“From where they come from, they have never lived alone.
“But I told them before we left the hotel (in Brisbane) that if we could get through 31 days of quarantine, 17 days in PNG and 14 in Queensland, then we should be able to cope with anything throughout the season.”
Church said the Queensland Rugby League had also helped the Hunters in terms of professional development and welfare checks while they were in quarantine.
He said the team had a feel of their new facilities after they arrived on the Gold Coast.
“They are enjoying the facilities here,” Church said.
“We also have a number of consultants who we have introduced them to.” Church said once they resume training, the players will be fine.
“They did a half session yesterday (Monday),” he said.
“Then they wanted to do some shopping and exploring so we let them do that.
“You know after 31 days of not getting out, they really wanted to go out and it was good that they did.”

  • Guys, a very warm welcome to Brisbane. If you have overcome 31 days of quarantine, you shall overcome anything that is ahead of you. We are very proud of every one of you, for we know you will make PNG happy and proud in your field of sport. Welcome!
