EVAGELICAL Lutheran Church has given literacy certificates to at least nine women after two weeks of an adult read-write course in Port Moresby.
The programme was conducted at Marimari Lutheran Church through the church’s education department to encourage reading and writing in pidgin.
Speaking at the ceremony, the director for national literacy and awareness secretariat at the Education Department, Willie Jonduo, said literacy was a big need in the country.
Jonduo said literacy was an essential skill to access information and actively participate in development in this technological era.
He applauded the church for initiating the programme to eradicate illiteracy.
“We will only guide you to create materials to extend your programme,” he said.
“We don’t write materials but we will support you to create one that can be best for your training.
“I urge you all the women to put to good use by teaching others of what you have learnt and expand your knowledge,” he said.
Mentor and trainer Ruth Yapi took the training through two weeks.
Yapi said the programme was funded by the the church’s education department.
“We have adult literacy programme running in 17 districts and this training was first in the Papuan region,” she said.
“The eight women trained here will help me train other adult women and men to take the literacy programme on board.
“We have 50 literacy book which will help us teach others in the church in the each three provinces.”
