Churches key to dealing with sorcery

National

CONSTITUTIONAL Law Reform Commission Secretary Dr Eric Kwa has condemned sorcery accusation-related violence in the country usually directed at vulnerable people, particularly women.
Nearly 50 church leaders from 14 denominations in the Mamose region, who attended a workshop in Lae organised by the commission, have come up with a strategy to tackle such violence.
The three-day workshop was the first of a series of regional consultations to be held around the country to develop a national churches strategic plan on sorcery beliefs and sorcery accusation-related violence.
Churches were collectively addressing sorcery.
Australian High Commission minister counsellor Andrew Egan said churches had a crucial role in reducing and eliminating sorcery accusation-related attacks.
The plan is to break the link between accusations of sorcery and violence and churches were urged to act and speak out against such violence in a consistent and coordinated way.
