THE PNG Customs Service (PNGCS) says the company alleged to be illegally producing cigarettes in Port Moresby has a license to do so.
Chief Commissioner Ray Paul said the company, Goldensborough Ltd, operating in Kennedy Estate at 7-Mile, Port Moresby, had been importing and distributing tobacco products, including paying legislated taxes, for the last eight years.
“We are aware a manufacturing license was issued to the same firm to commence production this year of cigarettes, also after meeting all requirements, including establishing machinery on the site,” Paul said.
Last Friday, members of the National Drug and Vice squad visited the factory to check on the legality of its operation. Paul said if there were illegal activities found, the law would be applied.
“We are aware that the firm is doing trial runs on production of tobacco products,” he said.
“We have approved their relocation from Gordon to Kennedy Estate, including moving machinery and recorded bonded tobacco products.
“If there is illegal production in commercial quantities in the current location, or by other firms in other sites, that Customs is not aware of.
“We will deal with them according to the laws of this land, including confirmation with outcome of investigation done by police underway.
“Customs is here to see, as much as possible, every player in the industry plays on a level playing field.
“That is our duty where our responsibility lies.
“We need to grow revenue base in a legal way for the Government to meet its development goals.
“While we commend the work of the police, there was no collaboration and consultative approach with Customs on the case, which is not the first time this has happened.
“This is not a good trend and we just hope that the situation was not motivated by other players in the industry.”
