Unavailability of officers slows probe

INVESTIGATION into the escape of notorious criminal Tommy Baker at Port Moresby General Hospital last year is “very slow” because of unavailability of officers, Correctional Service acting Commissioner Stephen Pokanis says.
He said the investigation was very slow last year because many prison officers were involved in last November’s Apec summit.
Pokanis said the case of the three officers who were on duty when Baker escaped would be heard by the disciplinary board.
Two officers are currently suspended from office.
“Many officers are back to their normal duties and the case is going to be sped up,” Pokanis said.
“I have briefed the board members this week already.”
Baker has escaped three times from Giligili Jail in Alotau and Bomana outside Port Moresby.
He was captured after the K200,000 Bank South Pacific robbery in Alotau last June.
Baker was also involved in a series of crimes in Alotau recently.
