THE Port Moresby Rugby Football League for the first time has more than K20,000 in its account carried over from last year.

League board chairman Dr James Naipao, pictured, and his deputy Wari Varage revealed that yesterday that the new board had a balance of K20,121.31 in its BSP account.

Naipao said it was through strict spending and proper accounting that the administration had managed to save money for the league unlike previous seasons where the league would find itself in the red or with next to no money to start  a new season off with.

“In 2013 I was the treasurer and the PRL had thousands of kina in the account but I did not sign or keep the cheque book and that was how the country’s best league ended up a shambles,” Naipao said.

He said in the previous years the board chairman held onto the cheque books and signed cheques without proper requisitions and invoices and reconciliatition and this was how money wasted and/or mismanaged.

The former Kumul backrower, said now that the league had some money he wanted the clubs to support the administration because it was being accountable.

“We have to be mindful that we are dealing with public money and every kina and toea should be accounted for and that was what actually happened in 2014 and it will be presented to the 14 affiliates during the annual general meeting on Wednesday.”

Naipao said it was evident that the clubs, players and the board all wanted the same thing – for the league to be successful and prosper and grow.

He thanked one of the league’s most committed sponsor, SP Brewery, in particular the brewery’s  general manager Stan Joyce for his continuous support over the years.

Naipao said Dekenai Construction was another company that was supporting the competition.

Varage hailed Naipao and the board for their efforts in 2014 and said the results spoke for itself.

He said the league was experiencing a period of properity becuase of the mananagement it had and he said this needed to be maintained.

Varage advised the 14 clubs to present their 2014 reports and pay their affiliation fee of K500 as deadline extended to Wednesday.

He said clubs who failed to comply would be dropped from the 2015 competition.
