Newcastle Thunder received no notification that contracted squad member Garry Lo had left the United Kingdom.

Lo, who entered into a contract alongside fellow Papua New Guineans Mark Mexico, Jason Tali and Charlie Wabo over the winter, failed to report to training last Wednesday.

Lo returned to Port Moresby last Thursday, cutting short his contract with the club.

With the circumstances surrounding Lo’s departure unclear, Thunder will make no further comment at this time.

Club head coach Stanley Gene, pictured, was bitter about Lo’s sudden exit from the club but wished him all the best in his rugby league career.

“Gary Lo is the only one out of the four who still struggles to pick up our structure of play,” Gene said.

“The other three players, Charlie Wabo, Jason Tali and Mark Mexico picked it up well.”

He said he had no problem with Lo leaving but he could have told the club.

He said they would have been happy to let him go.

He claimed that since Lo’s arrival in England, Lo had expected things to move quickly and was probably unhappy with the rate of progress in his career.

Gene called on those responsible for bringing Lo back to PNG to reimburse the club for expenses in taking him to England and setting him up at Garetshead.

Gene wished Lo the best.
