LAE City moved two points clear at the top of the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League with a 3-1 round-14 win over Kutubu at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium yesterday.
Alwin Komolong, Jacob Sabua and Emmanuel Airem scored City’s goals.
Papua New Guinea international Komolong scored an own-goal but City’s treble was enough to see the reigning champions pull clear of second-placed Vitiaz United and Hekari United, who drew 1-1 on Saturday.
Coach Bob Morris told The National earlier that City’s move to decentralise their attack could prove crucial as they look to claim minor honours with four rounds of the regular season left. “We have changed our attacking structures so that we won’t depend entirely on our strikers,” he said.
“Our (9-2 round-seven) win over Bougainville was a clear example of that.
“Nine different players from all positions scored a goal each.
“We had defenders Alwin Komolong and Philip Steven who scored from corner kicks.
“We had forwards Stahl Gubag and Abdias Aguirre.
“Midfielder Jacob Sabua, Emmanuel Airem, Ernest Gwaitep, Gustine Icaza and skipper Emmanuel Simon also scored a goal each.
“By broadening our attack to involve more players, it boosts our ability to score points even if our strikers have been contained.
“I believe my players are enjoying themselves and that is what we want as a team. I am talking to my players to keep doing what we do and focus on one game at a time.”
City face Morobe Wawens in round 15 at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on Saturday (1pm kick-off).
