SCHOOLS in Alotau forced to close last month after a student tested positive for the Covid-19 have re-opened, according to acting provincial education adviser Martin Sale.
The Milne Bay Provincial Health Authority gave the approval last Friday for the high school which the student was attending and three primary schools to reopen yesterday.
“Schools have restarted as per the directives from the provincial controller Ashan Numa.
“We have advised schools to follow strict Covid-19 protocols,” he said.
“All students and teachers are wearing masks.”
Schools have been advised to make up for the 14 days of missed classes to help students.
“All extra-curriculum activities are closed to allow teachers to hold additional classes,” he said.
“High schools will conduct weekend remedial and parents have been advised accordingly.”
The 19-year-old female student attending Cameron Secondary School who tested positive for the Covid-19 had to be isolated.
Numa said contact tracing and tests had been done and sent to the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) in Goroka.
“Reports last week showed the recovery of the female student whose second test returned negative 14 days after being tested positive. It was a great relief,” he said,
“There are eight persons from contact tracing, including students who had contact with the girl, which will require re-testing after the IMR rejected the initial samples.”
He urged the people wear masks.
The 11pm-5am curfew remains.
