STAFF of City Pharmacy Ltd were told to be responsible for their own rubbish, and not to litter.
The staff walked from Stop & Shop Boroko to Stop & Shop Central Waigani last Saturday collecting litter as part of their fight against plastic pollution in the city.
City Pharmacy nurse manager Sandra Cunningham said they filled 64 bags for the National Capital District Commission to collect.
“While this was not just about picking up rubbish, it was combined with the health aspect of a 3.5km walk for our healthy living focus by City Pharmacy,” she said.
“Papua New Guineans are facing a growing health crisis, with increasing problems of obesity, diabetes and non-communicable diseases.
“This is partly due to the declining rates of physical activity, high sugar intake, poor hygiene habits and an unhealthy environment.
“All this contributes to poor health. It seems logical, to walk for health and to clean up our streets, in making a conscious effort for change.
“Around the world, people are doing just that on a regular basis. This form of activity is called ‘Plalking – Picking up Litter while walking’.
“Imagine, if we could do something special for the community by simply picking up 10 pieces of rubbish every day.
“The difference we would make for our city, the country and for the planet, is an amazing thought.”
