City police take control of fight

A TWO-day fight between Korobosea and 2-Mile residents in Port Moresby has been quelled by police.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu said the communities had been told to leave the matter to the police to investigate and initiate arrests.
He said a petition was served to National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko but he advised them that it was almost polling and they should wait.
Ikumu said the fight erupted after a woman was allegedly raped by men believed to be from the Erom community in 2-Mile.
“We had difficulty catching the rape suspects and the victim on Sunday because the fight only ended midday yesterday,” he added.
“We managed to locate the victim and she is currently undergoing medical treatment in a hospital,” Ikumu said.
He said police were still trying to confirm the alleged rape.
“Some witnesses say the alleged rape occurred at the Koki Fish Market and others say she was allegedly dragged from the bus stop down the 2-Mile hill and raped in public,” he added.
“We are yet to confirm the location of the alleged rape.
“Also, we are trying to determine whether the rapists were from Goilala or were from the Erom community along 2-Mile,” he said.
Ikumu said he addressed the people yesterday and told them not take the law into their own hands.
