MORE than 100 homes in the Moresby North-East electorate were destroyed during flooding caused by last week’s heavy downpour, according to MP John Kaupa.
He said food gardens and other family properties were also affected.
“I have hundreds of reports on my table from Seven-Mile all the way to Laloki of houses being flooded,” he said.
He has allocated K200,000 from electorate funds provided for humanitarian assistance. It is being used to buy tents, food and water.
“It is still not enough as thousands of families have been affected,” he said.
“We are doing our best to help our people. My office is also in talks with the Minister for Inter- Government Relations Kevin Isifu and the National Disaster Centre to provide relief to people in the electorate.”
Kaupa also appealed to business houses in Port Moresby to assist the people with relief supplies.
“Many are living with friends and families, praying for the rain to stop and water levels to recede.”
Kaupa will be visiting the people in the electorate this week.
