POLICE have confirmed that some roads in Port Moresby will be closed next week for the Apec senior officials’ meeting – but it will not say which roads.
Roads closed will be for the exclusive use of the Apec officials, said Police Operations Commander Superintendent Peter Barkie. He did not say which roads will be affected.
“We anticipate a lot of traffic congestion because of the moving officials and delegates,” Barkie said.
“I urge the public for cooperation and understanding during the period.”
He said the public may not be able to use some areas in the city.
He said the joint security taskforce were marshalling troops for deployment for the meeting.
Barkie said the Apec meeting was a great opportunity for both the country and the people.
Apec joint services taskforce security deputy commander (police) Naua Vanuawaru expressed similar sentiments.
“As you are aware that there has been a lot of construction on the roads in the city. I am appealing to the public for your cooperation and support once again that there might be some traffic lanes that we need to block off or we need to divert the traffic so this might cause inconvenience,” he said.
“ I regret it but I ask your support and cooperation and understanding while we try to put measure to provide safety and security for our leaders who are coming into the country.”
