Civil registry engages 112 volunteer students to clear backlog

THE PNG Civil and Identity Registry (PNGCIR) has engaged 112 student volunteers to undergo a one-day training programme before unleashing them to fix a huge backlog of birth certificates and NID data, according to acting registrar-general Noel Mobiha.
Mobiha said hands-on training would start this week.
“Such programme needs to last long-enough to allow young participants to develop job-related competence and to prove to themselves in the specific work environment,” he said.
Mobiha said such a programme would give them an idea for their future careers and help them build self-confidence and be responsible. He said PNGCIR was targeting young people who finished school and were at risk of becoming long-term unemployed and those who were still in school.
Mobiha said the volunteers would work just like everyone who worked for the public service but would not be paid.
He said refreshments and transportation would be provided as they would be working day and night shifts.
Mobiha said the code of conduct in the work place was important in terms of punctuality, prohibition of alcohol, restrictions to in-house boy-girl relationship and “the most important thing is people who do not have loans or debt-ridden in terms of their pocket pay”. “We do not like people with loans because it will compromise the integrity of the operation,” he said.
Mobiha said they would help in processing the backlog of birth certificates and NID data for the entire country from 2015-2019. He said the same programme would take place in Lae and East New Britain.

  • What a shambles is PNG’s Civil registry.
Births, deaths, marriages would be better if conducted at Local Government HQ. They are more accessible to the communities.
