Civil registry moved back to department because of performance issues

THE civil registry has been moved back to the Department of Community Development, Youth and Religion because of performance issues, Minister Wake Goi says.
He said officers had not been performing their duties since the National Identification (NID) programme was initiated.
“We are now ready to move forward with civil registry duties,” he said.
He wants to see work on birth, death, marriage certificates and other legal documents fast-tracked.
“We will also help the Government on the census and common roll update,” he said.
He said Marape had wanted the NID programme to come under the National Statistics Office in the National Planning and Monitoring Department.
“We received legal advice that NID too should be under the civil registry but we respect the prime minister’s decision,” he said.
“The law itself interprets clearly that civil registry and NID should all come under my ministry.”
Meanwhile, department secretary Anna Bais explained that the civil registry was still a division under the department and not an office of its own.

  • It’s about time we see changes to this stupid civil registry department.. it takes them decades to process a simple NID card.

  • Non performance of the NID officers has always been an issue. Moving office will not solve the problem. They have been depleting the pay payers monies ever since the programme started. Let them work in the open and for that matter I don’t care but f!@#$% improve the service.

  • Let’s see some changes for the better. Sack all those unproductive staff and employ people who can work. NID card processing is very poor and it is a shame when officers play money tactic a very sick experience.
