Clan agrees to pay K42,000, 62 pigs in compensation
The National, Monday March 3rd, 2014
A CLAN in Southern Highlands has agreed to meet a K258,000 compensation claim from a neighbouring tribe over the death of a man in a road accident.
The Nonge-Solupere clan is from the Lower Mendi local level government, in Imbonggu district.
They will pay K42,000 plus 62 pigs at a cost of K216,000 to the Pulum clan within four weeks.
The original claim was K200,000 and 150 pigs to be paid within a month.
But after a day of negotiation, the relatives of the deceased agreed to accept what was being offered.
Former LLG president Graham Inua organised the peace talks.
Inua said Lower-Mendi was known for its peace-loving people.
“The problem has been settled and everyone is happy as peace has prevailed,” he said.
“Lower Mendi is a peaceful LLG ward unlike other areas where people turn to tribal fights as a means to resolve matters,” he said.
Nonge-Solupere clan leader Dominic Yosi thanked the peace and good order committee for ensuring that peace was maintained throughout. Yosi said K12,000 and 12 pigs were given as a belkol payment but was rejected by the relatives.
“Such high demands must be stopped and must not be set as a precedent. Many people come from poor backgrounds and could not meet such hefty demands,” he said.
