THREE clan leaders in Jiwaka are working with the police to arrest the ward councillor who allegedly shot dead a University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) undergraduate on Dec 14, says Jiwaka police commander Chief Insp Gideon Kauke.
“The clan leaders are negotiating with the suspect’s clan for his surrender to the police,” he said.
“The leaders are Thomas Wai, Allan Dick and Peter Kit.
“They are involved because it is better for them to talk to another clan. I wish to thank them for their help. They have been working very hard with us and I am confident of positive results.”
Kauke told The National that police were still searching for the suspect was on the run, moving from one location to another to evade arrest.
Stenic Whome Poiya, 25, a UPNG tourism and hospitality final year student, was spending his holiday in the village when he shot. Stenic and four friends were walking home from the Kindeng market at about 8pm when the gun-toting councillor fired at least three rounds, chasing a thief who was believed to have broken into his store.
