The case involving the confrontation of the two disciplinary forces on New Year’s Eve has been withdrawn, National Capital District Met Supt Benjamin Turi says.
He said the police had forgiven the soldiers and had given the matter back to the PNG Defence Force to deal with their officers.
“The young soldiers who were held accountable for their actions were brought to our office. And we saw them, talked to them and with my police station commander we agreed to withdraw the charges against them,” Turi told The National yesterday.
“We have done this because we know the officers were led astray by the actions of a senior officer who has no authority to do that.”
Turi said the officer who led them would be responsible for his actions.
“We forgive them from the bottom of our heart and we have no grudges against them.
“For us, we said enough and released them and as of today (Friday) it is over.
“We wrote to the commander that we (police) have nothing to do with these officers,” Turi said.
“Now it is up to the force to carry out the right disciplinary action to the officers involved.”
