Climate change is BSP’s priority

Letters, Normal

WE refer to the letter by “Puzzled well wisher” of Wewak titled “Congrats, Miss PNG” (The National, Aug 13) who asked what on earth is a marine biologist doing in a bank.
Miss BSP Rachel James (now Miss PNG) is employed by BSP as social and environmental management systems officer.
BSP, as a large global company, has a responsibility to play a part in addressing the unprecedented challenges of climate change, and to help our employees, customers and suppliers do the same.
James is helping BSP with the development of a specific climate change strategy which focuses on five elements:
* To reduce our carbon footprint and make our operations carbon neutral;
* To encourage our people to take action on climate change;
* To provide advice to our customers;
* To build partnerships with suppliers and government; and
* To continue to better understand risks and opportunities associated with our lending decisions and operations.
BSP continues to develop our employees’ environmental awareness and behaviour change programme.
Our aim is to ensure environmental considerations are integrated throughout the organisation and that is why James plays an important role.
She decided to join BSP professionally and was delighted to represent PNG’s largest bank in the quest because the vision BSP has to be the leading bank in the South Pacific.
Starting from the end of this year, our customers will see the benefits from these significant system and service improvements.
