NORTHERN End Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Peter Guinness is concerned with the closure of schools and health facilities in Obura-Wonenara, Eastern Highlands after the death of five people, including two students.
The deaths occurred when warring communities of Norikori and Barabundora-Norainda agreed to ceasefire.
ACP Guinness condemned the killings and closure of government facilities that would affect people, especially women and children’s education and urged leaders to find amicable solution immediately before investigations began.
He said four primary schools and a feeder school, besides the only Evangelical Brotherhood Church-run health centre, were closed.
He said after the ceasefire agreement from warring groups, the fight ensued and resulted in another killing that paved way for opportunists to loot schools.
“These killings without respect to human dignity are outrageous and barbaric while looting and destruction of state properties without taking into consideration the significance of services to humanity, is totally insane and unbecoming of the actions of civilised people,” ACP Guinness said.
“My instructions to community leaders is to find ways and means soon on the best solution to this issue before police investigations begin.
“You have initiated the problems, therefore, you must find a possible way that will best accommodate peace for everybody.”
ACP Guinness said the provincial education board appointed school principals on merits.
“If the community and the leaders were unhappy with PEB decision, then proper procedures are available for aggrieved party to submit their grievances.”
