THE Royal Port Moresby Golf Club will be hosting an annual challenge to honour the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
The club hosted the Sir Michael Somare ambrose competition on Friday in memory of Sir Michael, the club’s former patron.
Club president Ian Hodge said 54 teams turned up to participate in the one-day event and remember him as a passionate golfer.
“The golf challenge was to remember Sir Michael and his passion as a golf player and a patron to this club,” Hodge said.
“We didn’t want his memory to disappear in an oblivion.
“We wanted to enjoy and remember what he had done for the club, for the golf members and for the country as a whole.
“So for the one-day event, we had 54 teams turn up and played in his honour.”
Hodge said the annual event would be continued as a tradition.
“Our new club patron Prime Minister James Marape was also present to be part of the event in memory of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael,” he said.
“The format of the one-day event was having two-players per team, the price in Ambrose was to tee the best ball with the good shot.
“So whoever got the ball into the hole first got a good score at the end of the day.”
Hodge said the club would host a four-man ambrose tournament in April this year where the winners would be awarded the Sir Michael Somare shield at the end of the event.
“We do have the Sir Michael Somare shield which is a four-man ambrose tournament expected to take place on April 11.
“Last year was very massive and we are hoping this year would be the same.”
