SI athletes to participate in Queensland state competition

ATHLETES from three national federations in Solomon Islands will be heading to Australia to participate in Queensland State competitions as part of preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games.
The Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports (Sinis) said 62 athletes and coaches from Solomon Islands Athletics, Solomon Islands Swimming Federation and Triathlon Solomon Islands would be joining Sinis performance team to attend a high performance camp and state competitions in Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Sinis said the group would be based at the Gold Coast Performance Centre for seven days to fine tune their training and preparations before heading into competition.
It said athletics would be competing in the Queensland State Championships at QEII over four days in sprints, hurdles, jumps, through and shorter middle distance.
Triathlon will be competing in the Queensland Tri Series event in Raby Bay over the super sprint distance of 400m swim, 15km bike and 4km run.
The swimming squad will compete in the Gold Coast Championships across three days in multiple events.
Sinis said the athletes across all three sports would be assisted by their national coaches along with overseas mentor coaches from Australia engaged in the programme.
The mentor coaches who are soon to be announced have worked with Olympic and National level athletes.
The squad will be leaving Honiara in two groups with 36 athletes and coaches leaving on Wednesday and another 26 leaving on Friday.
Sinis will provide updates of the squad’s training and performance.
Other national federations are currently selecting squads in beach volleyball, netball, basketball and indoor volleyball for a joint training camp and competitions in March and April.
Sinis expects all sports preparing for 2023 Pacific Games to engage in at least two international camps and competitions this year funded through Sinis. – Solomon Star
