NEWCOMERS Vabukori Mosquitoes and SS Rabbitohs have been praised for fielding women’s teams in the Moresby South Rugby League competition this season.
Competition manager Moses Kumbi said registering women’s teams was a requirement of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League to promote gender equality in communities across the country.
He said Mosquitoes and Rabbitohs were playing their part to help develop raw talents at Vabukori village and Two-Mile.
“It’s exciting to see Mosquitoes and Rabbitohs competing against the top sides in the league,” Kumbi said.
“I encourage them to commit themselves to training and rugby league.”
He said training was crucial to maintaining their fitness and avoid major injuries during matches.
Kumbi said Gabutu Dragons, Sab City Raiders and Two-Mile Pearls had experienced players while Joyce Bay Roosters and Vadavada United were still developing combinations among their young players.
“We have identified several young females who are PNG Orchids prospects,” he said.
“But they need proper training and coaching to assist with their development.
“Kaugere Bulldogs, Kaugere Seagulls, Six-Mile Crows, Taurama Wolfpack, Kipo Eastern Pride, Talai Spartans, Kone Eagles, Koki Eels need to comply with the requirement of fielding women’s teams.
“They must commit to involving female players to encourage gender equality in their communities.
“If Mosquitoes and Rabbitohs can field women’s teams, I don’t see why the others can’t.”
