Coach wants Eagles to get basics right

THE winless Mt Hagen Eagles have to get the basics right if they are to turn their Digicel Cup season around, says coach Billy Gau.
“We have what it takes to cause upsets but we are not getting the basics right,” he said.
“We have to get them right going forward.
“Poor ball security is our biggest problem.
“Our defence is poor as teams continue to find gaps in attack.
“But most of my players are new and I am satisfied with their performances.
“They are learning in every game and will only get better.”
After their 10-16 round-four loss to hosts Port Moresby Vipers over the weekend, Gau said for many of his players, it was their rookie season in the country’s premier rugby league competition.
“We were terrible in our round-one clash with the Gurias,” he said.
“We lost 10-30.
“But we have been competitive in our past three games.
“It’s only the basics that continue to let us down.
“We were competitive in our 18-22 loss to the Mendi Muruks in Lae.
“In round three, we lost 10-16 to Gulf Isou.”
Meanwhile Gau, said Papua New Guinea Kumuls coach and high performance director Michael Marum was in Mt Hagen last week, giving tips to local coaches.

  • This club keeps emphasizing nepotism so that’s why you keep losing Games.

I would suggest the management could be fair enough to have some talented ones roaming around on board then we might see discrepancies.

  • Yamka Mel agree with you, nepotism at its best. Every year new management with new players. I have noticed some best players produced by this club but they joining other clubs after. I think the management need to reconsider and provide the best well-being of the players to keep them remain in the club.

Kanges Taft Luck now Better Luck next time…
