THE Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) has deferred the Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League (NSRL) Championships to the end of next month (July 22-27) in Port Moresby.
The championships were initially set for July 1-8.
PNGRFL chief executive Reatau Rau said the deferral was due to their broadcast partner Click TV’s commitment towards covering the Pacific Games from July 7-20.
Meanwhile, the Southern leg of the Coca-Cola National Schools Rugby League Regional Championships kicks off at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby today.
Rau said schools in Moresby North-West, Moresby North-East, Moresby South, Motu-Koita and Central would field teams in the Under-14 boys, U16 boys, U18 boys and open-girls divisions.
“Each division will play against each other starting tomorrow (Wednesday) and ending on Thursday,” Rau said.
He said the leg would be kicked off by Southern Confederate director Gwaibo Mairi at 9.00am, with Central and Pom Souths beginning proceedings in the U14 division.
“All teams in the four divisions will assemble at the Stadium by 8.30am tomorrow,” Rau said.
He said the event would showcase some of the best young talent in Port Moresby and Central.
“U14 boys, U16 boys, U18 boys and open-girls teams will be selected to represent the Southern Confederate at next month’s Coca-Cola NSRL National Championships in Port Moresby,” Rau said.
Today’s event is expected to attract a good crowd, with parents and families urged to turn up and support their children.
“These are our future and please turn out in numbers and give them your support,” Rau said.
Meanwhile, Rau acknowledged the support of PHA, Boroko Motors and The National for their support at the championships.
