THE sporting fraternity joined the rest of the country in mourning the loss of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare with codes and organisations paying their respects over the weekend.
The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) in a statement paid its respects to Sir Michael and his contributions as the founding father of the country.
“PNGOC and Team PNG joins the nation in mourning the loss of the founding father of our country,” it said.
“Sir Michael was an exceptional leader who inspired our nation.
“We will forever remember what you have done for us, how you lived and the value you created for an experience that passes in one’s life.
“Your race is now run as you leave behind a lasting and remarkable legacy.”
The rugby league and rugby union communities, through the PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) and the National Capital District Rugby Union (NCDRU), also conveyed their condolences to the late Sir Michael’s family.
“We are joining the rugby league fraternity to convey our deepest condolences to the Somare family,” PNGNRLC said.
NCDRU said: “As a community organisation, we recognise the path of the past introduced by our forefather’s that has led us to enjoy the choices and luxuries of sports we have today.
“For this very reason, we thank the late Sir Michael and appreciate the sacrifices he had to make to offer us this privilege.
“With great respect and love for Sir Michael, we send our heartfelt condolences to the Somare family and the people of our country during this difficult time.”
